Fash 1A Course Description



FASH 1A Fashion Survey - Course Information
Pasadena City College -- Fashion Department

Catalogue Description:
Introduction to fashion, career concepts, research and clothing construction.  Orientation to fashion careers, aptitude to fashion, life, skills, time management, and education planning.  Industrial sewing equipment, tools, and materials will be used to produce samples of elementary level garment construction as foundation to the understanding of pattern construction, fashion design, manufacturing, and production.
  • Total of 36 hours lecture and 72 hours laboratory.
  • Transfer Credit: CSU
  • All projects must be completed and you must earn a grade of “C” or better to pass the class.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to....
  • Demonstrate effective operation of industrial sewing equipment. 
  • Layout, cut and mark fabrics for production.
  • Assemble samples and garments that show a wide variety of entry level garment construction skills.
  • Demonstrate an entry-level understanding of pattern development.
Class Content:
  • Become familiar with tools and equipment of the apparel trade
  • Construct samples and garments to learn professional sewing and finishing techniques, and how they relate to fashion design
  • Learn the importance of the quality and grain line of fabric in relation to sewing
  • Discover the properties of different fabrics, fabric construction and fabric terminology
  • Put into practice practical skills that combine draping and flat pattern drafting
  • Fill out production documents such as pattern cards, spec sheets and cost sheets
Grading Standards:
Final grades are based on a combination of attendance points, tests/quizzes, written assignments, and major projects.  All assignments are graded and evaluated for how well instructions are followed, quality, completeness and accuracy.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS and PROJECTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and WILL NOT BE EVALUATED.

A student can potentially earn 10 attendance points every day.  2.5 points will be deducted for every tardy (5 minutes or later), instance of leaving early/missing clean up, and for not being prepared with correct supplies.   If you are late, not prepared, and leave early, you may only earn 2.5 points.

Projects

Sewing Samples
  • Seam samples and Shaped samples that demonstrate sewing techniques. 
  • Grade includes the presentation of the assignments in a well organized binder with typed labels 
  • Computer written instructions should be included, along with drawings or diagrams. 
Tote Bag
  • Lined ‘bucket’ bag with two strap (web) handles 
  • Patch pocket on the front or lining 
Skirt sample #1
  • Sewing sample of a size 8 skirt, using a pattern provide in class, of woven cotton fabric 
  • Front and back darts, back lapped zipper, and slit vent 
  • Set on waistband using packaged pre-cut fusible interfacing 
Draped Skirt sample #2 
  • Create an original sewing pattern by combining draping muslin on a dressform and flat pattern techniques 
  • Use industrial techniques to sew a fit sample and a final sample that includes: 
  • Front and back darts 
  • Invisible zipper 
  • Faced waistline with fusible interfacing 
  • Pleated or flounce hem detail 
  • Prepare complete finished pattern on manila paper 
  • Prepare complete Tech Pack for the skirt sample 
  • Pattern Card 
  • Spec Sheet 
  • Cost Sheet 
Vocabulary Assignments
  • Worksheets that help identify industrial sewing, fabric, draping, and patternmaking tools and terms 
  • Will be e-mailed out to you to print out, or download from the FASH 1A blog 
Math Work Pages
  • Demonstrate understanding of mathematical computations and applications. 
  • Know and apply fractions and measurements. 
Project Design Sheets
  • Develop original versions of the class projects by drawing production “flats” 
  • Select appropriate textiles and identify key details and changes made to each item 
Notebook for Written Assignments
  • A well organized notebook with table of contents, title page and dividers labeling each chapter or section will be comprised of the following parts: 
  • Class notes 
  • Diagrams drawn during demonstrations 
  • Project Design sheets 
  • Grade sheets for each sewn project 
  • Vocabulary assignments 
  • Math work pages 
  • Samples mounted on white pages and labeled, with written instructions 
  • Any additional assignments or work pages 
Absences Make-up
Lab Hours Make-up Time: with instructor’s permission, students may be able to attend another section of FASH 1A or other lab course to complete projects.
  • Attending faculty must sign form showing attendance 
  • Supervising faculty should advise student before they attend another section. 
  • Students must not disrupt another section or work alone when lab is not in use. 
NO WORK MAY BE COMPLETED AT HOME or by another person.
