TOTE BAG Project


TOTE BAG PROJECT


This project is a square lined bag of woven cotton broadcloth with webbing handles. You will learn to sew seams with 1/2" seam allowances, turn a hem edge and top stitch or edge stitch that in place. There is a patch pocket which may be sewn to the front or lining.

SUPPLIES:
  • 1 yard cotton muslin or woven fabric, Fabric type: 100% cotton in a woven broadcloth, twill or poplin.  You may buy 1/2 yard lengths of two contrasting fabrics a "Self" (outer fashion fabric) and "Lining" (inside fabric)
  • 1 cone thread to match
  • 4 feet of pre-woven webbing (1 1/3 yard)
  • 1 yard fusible interfacing, medium to heavy weight (optional)
Please print out the following instruction sheet, read it, follow it while you are sewing, and put it in the "Tote Bag" section of your notebook.  The last page of this document is the evaluation sheet that will be turned in with your finished bag.

SAMPLES Project



SAMPLES
Samples are prepared to practice difficult or new techniques before applying that technique to a garment project. Samples will be sewn at different times throughout the semester. All will be turned in mounted on white paper, labeled and neatly arranged.

  • Seam samples and Shaped samples that demonstrate sewing techniques 
  • Grade includes the presentation of the assignments in a binder or notebook with computer labels, organization 
  • Computer written instructions should be included, along with drawings or diagrams.
Supplies
  • 1 yard plain cotton MUSLIN 
  • Cone thread in a contrasting color
  • Fabric shears
  • Thread snips 
Presentation


  • Use a pin to mount each sample on heavy white paper. 
  • TYPE the sample name at the top of each page. 
  • TYPE the directions for each sample on the page. 
  • Include drawings where necessary. 
  • Put the mounted sample in a clear plastic sheet protector. 
  • Keep the samples, in order, in a 3 ring binder or envelope.

  • Pre-cut all patterns BEFORE lab session with paper shears
